I have good news and bad news. First the good news. The Saturday Night Winestream is scheduled to be back May 6, 2023 at its regular time from 10-11:30 PM Eastern. In spite of the late start, season 5 is somewhat on track for a Saturday night debut, albeit without some of the films that I had planned to have restored and ready to show. This was entirely due to a little side show called Drink With Rick Rewine, which launched on the new 100TV Network today. Nevertheless, I am getting things ready to go and hopefully the winestream will happen without a hitch.
Now for the bad news. Last week I received news from the Twitterverse that Mr. Musk and company shut down Twitter Media Studio, or at least cut off access to it by regular folks like me. Sure enough, when I tried to access Media Studio, it was no longer available. What makes it bizarre is that when I attempted to do so, it takes me to a whole series of pages promoting Media Studio and talking about how great it is, but with no links to get there and no explanation as to how to find it. This makes the experience rather frustrating, and more than a little weird.
What this means is that I have no way to access Media Studio to set up my stream on Twitter. Now, I’ve been told that using a streaming service such as Restream will allow you to do it, but you still need to acquire a stream key. I use Castr.io to multistream, and I do have a stream key for Twitter, but it seems to either be broken on the Castr platform or blocked. Even so, whenever I set up a Twitter stream in the past, I always had to create a broadcast event and activate it in Twitter Media Studio before it would go live there, even with my permanent stream key. Perhaps Restream users have something I don’t? I don’t know. All I know is that I can no longer stream on Twitter.
Not that it was a really big deal anyway. Yes, I did have viewers, but almost no active engagement. I might as well have just tweeted out a link to YouTube or somewhere else instead, which is probably what I’m going to do from now on.
Unless I find a replacement for Twitter during the next few days, season 5 will only be streaming on four platforms. If you were watching the show on Twitter @drinkwithrick, you can still watch and participate in the live chat on YouTube, Twitch, Odysee, and the Drink With Rick Facebook page*.
Suggestions for alternatives are welcome and will be considered. If you know of any other platforms that are set up for streaming video, please let me know in the comments below.
*until Facebook does something stupid to screw that up again.
As you may know, the fourth season of The Saturday Night Winestream ended with the 200th episode of the show, after which there was a 6 week break. Other than a week off for a little rest, I have not been sitting on my laurels, but have been busy developing a new project directly related to the show.
During the last episode of the season, I hinted around at the possibility of such a project, but could not provide any details because it was still only conceptual at the time. Now that it’s about to launch, I can provide more detail along with an official announcement.
On Monday, May 1, 2023, a new streaming network will launch called 100TV. Conceived by founder and author of the “100 Predictions” franchise Ross Brand, 100TV Network is described as “the destination station for the internet’s most original collective of in-demand voices”. The goal of the network is to eventually host 100 original shows from 100 unique creators, for a different kind of streaming experience.
The network will initially stream on YouTube each Monday morning beginning May 1, 2023 at 11 AM EDT with 6 hours of programming. Additional shows are to stream on Tuesdays beginning June 1. Many of these shows are produced by social influencers, motivational speakers, podcasters and other digital media professionals such as Joie Gharrity, Renee Hastings, Nicole Sanchez, Rob Greenlee and Jim Fuhs. All are original shows, streaming exclusively on 100TV.
Where am I going with all this? Well, a couple of weeks before the end of season 4 of the winestream, I was invited by Ross to be part of this group. I accepted the invitation, and spent most of the past five weeks developing a show of my own. The result is a weekly half hour show called Drink With Rick Rewine. The show features highlights of wine reviews and off-topic entertainment from classic episodes of Drink With Rick on The Saturday Night Winestream, prefaced with commentary and notes about each clip from me. The interludes between segments can be described as sort of a cross between those of Svengoolie and How I Met Your Mother.
Drink With Rick Rewine streams at 4:30 PM EDT. I don’t really know where this is going to go, to be honest, or if it goes anywhere at all. This is a real experiment for me, and kind of an expensive one at that, both in time, resources and money. This is the only show out of the weekly network lineup so far that is categorized as entertainment rather than anything related to business, marketing or personal motivation, so how it will be received is anybody’s guess. It will be interesting to watch how it plays out, nonetheless. At least it comes on around Happy Hour, so it’s got that going for it.
Please check out the YouTube premiere of 100TV Network on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 11 AM Eastern. Let me know what you think of the shows and the network in the comments below.
This is the two hundredth episode of the live winestream. To celebrate the 200th episode, I open, taste, and review a Caymus 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California! We also toast national days. Plus, chicken jokes, photos of my studio, a look back at the early days of the Winestream, how to make Leprechaun beer, a Super 8 comedy short, and Open Chat.
